Maria Jose Esquivel was raised on a Costa Rican coffee farm where she spent her time dragging mud into the house and howling at the moon.

Her love of storytelling has led to a specialization in storyboarding, visual development, and frightened bunny illustrations. She almost became a medieval historian before going on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design, and ArtCenter College of Design; this has not deterred her from regaling innocent bystanders with explanations about the symbolism present in 12th century Bretonic literature.

When not daydreaming about imaginary people and places, she spends her time reenacting films from memory, and drinking lemon juice with salt. She has on ongoing love-affair with the book Watership Down.
